Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical deep cleaning used to treat gum disease. When plaque and tartar build up below the gumline, they can cause infection, inflammation, and bone loss. This treatment removes bacteria from deep pockets around the teeth, helping the gums heal and preventing further damage.

How It Works

The area is gently numbed for comfort, and specialized instruments are used to remove buildup from beneath the gums. The root surfaces are then smoothed to reduce bacteria and support gum reattachment. Treatment is often completed in sections of the mouth, followed by periodontal maintenance to maintain gum health.

What It’s Like

After treatment, it is normal to experience mild soreness, gum tenderness, or slight bleeding for a few days. Some patients also notice temporary tooth sensitivity to hot or cold, especially as the gums begin to heal and tighten around the teeth.

As inflammation decreases, the gums should appear less swollen and feel firmer. With proper home care and follow-up periodontal maintenance visits, pocket depths can improve and gum health can stabilize. Keeping up with brushing, flossing, and recommended maintenance cleanings is essential to prevent the infection from returning.
