Inlay & Onlay

If you have a tooth that’s too damaged for a simple filling but not in need of a full crown, inlays and onlays offer an excellent middle ground. These restorations are custom-made to fit the exact shape of the damaged area, strengthening the tooth while preserving more of your natural enamel.

How It Works

Inlays and onlays are indirect restorations made in a dental lab from strong materials like porcelain or composite resin. An inlay fits within the cusps (bumps) of a tooth, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps. Both are more durable and longer-lasting than traditional fillings and ideal for moderate decay, fractures, or large old restorations that need replacement.

What to Expect

First Visit:
Your dentist removes decay or old filling material and shapes the area for a precise fit. Digital scans or impressions are taken and sent to a lab, where your custom inlay or onlay is crafted. A temporary restoration may be placed to protect the tooth in the meantime.

Second Visit:
Once ready, the custom inlay or onlay is checked for fit, shade, and bite. It’s then bonded securely to the tooth, restoring strength, appearance, and function with a restoration that blends naturally into your smile.
